What is Sparring?
Technical Sparring classes are combat classes, where you will learn to spar like a competing boxer.
Sparring is an essential component of your development as a boxer. Even if you are never planning on competing, sparring adds a whole new dimension to your boxing training, keeping it fresh and exciting.
It is probably the most important training aspect of being a fighter. Sparring goes beyond punching and defence. This is where you actually learn to fight. You get to see what works and what doesn’t and you find out exactly what needs to be improved. Done right, climbing into the ring and sparring with an opponent is an enjoyable and addictive experience.
You will learn technical and conditional sparring. These are types of situational sparring, meaning the focus is on what you do when a certain situation presents itself in the boxing match.
The situation could be anything – one boxer has another on the ropes, in the corner, toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring – it doesn’t matter – but the goal of the sparring session is to condition responses to specific situations the boxer may find him or herself in.
All sparing is controlled and supervised by our boxing coaches.
Please bring a head guard, gum-shield, groin guard and hand wraps for sparring. Hand wraps and gum-shields can be purchased at reception at Underdog Boxing. Head guard and groin guard can be ordered on request.
